We are rarely really happy, but frequently feeling safe, or "okay", or numb and distracted, as we struggle to change something so we can be happy!
What we really want is a happiness that is far deeper
and built on an enduring inner experience not a fleeting external one.
The Deepak Chopra book pictured above claims to have the ultimate prescription. I found as i read through, that it does indeed and it bore an uncanny relationship to many of things we teach in our intensive treatment and mastery groups. But with some lovely new insights and
instructions. Read as is, you might not see how it can be applied to eating disorders and other compulsions we encounter.
Because of that and because of the richness of the content of this little book, we are going to run our Super Summer Mastery Program based on adapting its keys to happiness as keys that can be used for intervention
with compulsive addictive eating. 7 keys over 8 weeks this summer beginning with an introduction in July.
But first I wanted to address an important idea the book discusses about the biological set point of being happy. There is a good deal of research suggesting that there is a set point of how happy people can be. A
whopping 40% of the happiness formula they say is genetic and doesn't change much. So basically if your parents were unhappy you will be too.
IT'S NOT TRUE!! Many things can cause us to have a struggle with happiness. But once we are there we get things backwards. We think that if we get
some external thing we will be happy - it rarely works that way. Instead we end up in an endless chase. Buddhists call this the dance of the hungry ghosts always grasping for something just beyond their reach. The Keys below can give you some ideas! And WiseHeart can give you some ideas about how to change that proverbial happiness set point chemically, cognitively and consistently.
